How to fix "An error occurred in the Server Components render. The specific message is omitted in production builds"
Locally the page works. On Vercel it shows "Application error" and the console says An error occurred in the Server Components render. The specific message is omitted in production builds to avoid leaking sensitive details. plus a digest number. The real error is on the server, not in the browser.
Step 1: find the real message
- Copy the
digestvalue. - In Vercel, open the project, then Logs (or the deployment's Runtime Logs), and search for that digest or the page path at the same time.
- The log line holds the actual error and stack trace.
Or run the production build yourself: npm run build && npm start. You will see the full error in your terminal.
The usual causes
- Missing env vars in production. A key that exists in
.env.localwas never added to Vercel, so a client constructor throws. Add it under Settings, Environment Variables, then redeploy. - A fetch that fails on the server. Calling your own API with a relative URL (
fetch('/api/x')) from a server component fails. Call the function directly instead. - Reading something that is undefined. Data that is always present locally (seeded rows) is empty in production, so
data[0].namethrows. - A database that rejects Vercel. IP allow lists or a paused database.
Step 2: fail gracefully
Add an error.tsx next to the page so users see a friendly message and a retry button instead of a crash, and guard data with checks like if (!data) notFound();.
Check the fix
- Redeploy and load the page directly and through navigation.
- Runtime logs show no new errors.
